Texas

By John Aretos, CEO of Police Mortgage

Everything in Texas seems to be bigger and better. I wouldn't mess with a Texas Ranger.

Similar to how we were talking about Ohio, Texas has a low cost of living. It offers no state income tax and reasonable property taxes. The state also has a homestead exemption that reduces property tax rates for homeowners.

I have a relative who moved out there years ago and retired. She loves it in the Dallas area, just absolutely loves it. Police Mortgage loves serving law-enforcement families with police home loans and many other financial products in Texas.

The big thing in Texas though, is you have to have a pool. It seems like a lot of great homes have that amenity. So, if you buy a single-family home, it helps to have a pool. If you need help building a pool in Texas, we might be able to help with a home-equity loan with our home loan programs for law enforcement.

If you can get past that weather in the summertime, particularly the humidity, I think you can be pretty happy in Texas. There are so many choices in that state with Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and especially Austin which has really boomed recently.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States by population. So, you’ll probably have to deal with some intense traffic.  But, as with all cities, we have a lot of respect for their police officers out there.

We would love to do more business with law-enforcement families in Texas. There are some restrictions in that state as it relates to home equity lending and title insurance that make lending a bit more challenging than in other states. There are some instances where expenses are fairly high for mortgages in Texas, believe it or not.

Home affordability in general is definitely a positive aspect of living in Texas. A possible exception is Austin where the real estate market has really boomed. But, hey, everything’s bigger in Texas.
