The biggest thing for me with Police Mortgage, and I think it is the differentiator, is that we are specifically built to work with police and first responders. So, there’s really two aspects to that.
The first part is just the understanding of working with the police and first responders. What makes us unique is that our business is geared for understanding the needs are of the police, firefighters, EMTs, and more.
That delves into the second point which is Police Mortgages have something attached to them called Killed-in-the-Line of Duty Loan Protection (KILOD). This is something very unique in what we offer. It’s also offered by our parent company, Chicago Patrolmen’s FCU.
KILOD is a debt cancellation feature whereby if you have up to an aggregate amount of $850,000 in loans with either our parent company or with us for a mortgage loan, and you are an active law-enforcement professional, and you are to killed in the line of duty all of that debt is forgiven.
The disclaimer on that again is that you have to be an active sworn police officer to be eligible for KILOD but that really is a primary differentiator for the mortgages for police that we offer.
The first differentiator goes back to the lifestyle of police and other first responders are in terms of their shifts, the hours they work, and the demands that are placed on them. It’s pretty obvious to those of us who are very close to law enforcement and their families that the work environment is very tough. It’s more dangerous today than it’s ever been. Our employees understand that.
First responders have lives outside of the job and those lives involve real life problems. How do I pay my bills? Am I making enough money to make a living here? Can I support myself? And if I want to move and improve my life, do I have the time? And do I have the energy to be research mortgages for first responders?
It’s more just credit and income histories to us. For Police Mortgage It’s more about the human element. I think that what we do is we handle that human element very well. The bottom line is that I take it seriously. All of our people take it seriously.
We try to make sure that we’re meeting first responders and their families on their terms. Sometimes that’s weeknights, sometimes that’s weekends, sometimes it’s early in the morning when they’re coming off a shift.
Our officers are trained to be able to talk to the police and other first responders. We’re on your side. We understand that there’s a need for support, both moral support and financial support.
Sometimes there is an ancillary conversation that starts due to the stresses of the job. We have training for that. We, we talk about suicide prevention. We talk about how to manage first responders if they come in and they show signs of desperation or depression.
We want to be there for them and we’re equipped with the tools that are needed, financially and otherwise. That’s the difference with Police Mortgage.
